Detroit Red Wings Game Analysis, After-Action Report for Saturday Jan 3rd: Detroit Red Wings 1 - Vancouver Canucks 4

New, comments
Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports

The Red Wings look like they got run out of a building in losing a game by a score of 4-1 that was closer than the score indicated. Two empty-net goals and a bunch of special teams failure by Detroit doomed them here.

Box Score Here

The reffing in this one was pretty bad, but both of Vancouver's power play goals (4 chances) were scored on actual good calls. None of Detroit's goals were scored on good penalty calls because they went 0-for-3 on the power play. Shots were 30-24 in favor of Detroit.

Jimmy Howard stopped two breakaways and a number of good scoring chances, but he was solidly outplayed by a very good performance from Ryan Miller at the other end.

Guide to plus/minus adjustments

The Goals

2nd Period 1:48 - Vancouver Goal (PP): Alexander Edler (slap shot) from Henrik Sedin and Daniel Sedin
Vancouver gets on the board first as Edler blasts one through a screen. I'm not going to make an adjustment on this one. There's some good puck movement on this goal and Edler takes an aggressive line to get into shooting position. Even if Helm releases back to the point sooner, I don't think he's going to get into good position to do anything about this.

3rd Period 10:49 - Vancouver Goal (PP): Radim Vrbata (wrist shot) unassisted
The Canucks get another power play goal as Vrbata cleans up a rebound out front. A point shot is kicked to the corner where the Canucks recover. One Sedin goes to another at the dot covered by two players, but a quick cross-ice pass finds Vrbata in the opposite end corner absolutely all alone. Kronwall has to lock up with Burrows at the net front, so Vrbata gets low to the interior of the circle before firing a shot that Howard stops. Miller clears the rebound away from the crease, but it goes right back to Vrbata who lifts it over a sprawling Howard. I'm going to give Miller a minus and a half on this play for covering over too far to the right side (half-minus) and then clearing the puck right to Vrbata (full minus). Kronwall will also get a minus for giving up the passing lane to Vrbata on the feed from Sedin. He chases Burrows behind the net, leaving nobody watching the net-front area. That's bad anticipation.

3rd Period 16:30 - Detroit Goal: Tomas Tatar (slap shot) from Gustav Nyquist and Danny DeKeyser
Detroit pulls Howard and Tatar breaks the shutout on a one-timer from the top of the circle. Nyquist digs a puck out behind the Vancouver net and get it to DeKeyser at the point, who goes right back to Nyquist at the half-wall. As Tanev moves in to pinch him off, Nyquist feeds a backhander toward the middle of the ice where Tatar blasts it around Miller. Nyquist will get a half-plus for the won board battle and Abdelkader will get a screener's assist. Miller never sees this.

3rd Period 18:09 - Vancouver Goal (EN): Henrik Sedin (wrist shot) from Daniel Sedin and Alex Edler
The Sedins salt it away with an empty-netter fro the wrong side of center that you're allowed to try if you're the captain. No adjustment on this one. This was an entire line's worth of failure so no minuses should be cleared.

3rd Period 19:28 - Vancouver Goal (EN): Henrik Sedin (mopery) from Daniel Sedin
Another empty netter super-salts it away. Who cares? No adjustment.

The Penalties

1st Period 09:56 - Ryan Stanton (interference) against Tomas Tatar: Taters blocks a shot at the top of the Wings' zone and heads immediately up ice. Stanton steps over to slow him down and prevent a breakaway. It works, but Stanton sits for the good penalty. Tatar will earn a plus.

2nd Period 00:46 - Henrik Zetterberg (slashing) against Henrik Sedin: Hank sits a spell for chopping down on Henrik's lumber and breaking his own stick trying to get a scoring chance in the offensive zone. This is how the penalty has been called for years. Minus for Zetterberg.

2nd Period 03:39 - Jonathan Ericsson (hooking) against Nick Bonino: Riggy chases with Bonino on a dumped-in puck and Bonino takes the right angle to have the puck bounce back to him while holding off Riggy. In response, Ericsson slows Bonino down with a hook. Minus for Ericsson.

2nd Period 11:27 - Brendan Smith (hooking) against Shawn Matthias: After a rare good chance for the Wings, Vancouver gets it up ice to Matthias threatening to split the D. Both Ouellet and Smith get back on him, but Matthias falls down and the ref believes it was because of a hook. Smith will get a half-minus for allowing Matthias to get into position to draw this.

2nd Period 15:49 - Johan Franzen (tripping) and Zach Kassian (diving): Kassian skates over Franzen's stick and throws himself to the ice like he's been shot. Somehow the refs take Franzen too. No adjustment here.

3rd Period 01:41 - Ryan Stanton (hooking) against Gustav Nyquist: On a feed from Tatar, Nyquist gets the puck to the net-front area. Stanton hooks Nyquist to keep him from getting a shot off. This is a good penalty to take for Stanton, but Nyquist will get a plus and Tatar a half-plus on the pass.

3rd Period 03:35 - Daniel Sedin (hooking) against Gustav Nyquist: After getting a breakaway chance due to a hook at center, Daniel Sedin takes a weak hooking call to make up for the one the refs should have called. No adjustment on this one.

3rd Period 10:01 - Danny DeKeyser (hooking) against Shawn Matthias: DeKeyser loses the position battle behind the net and hooks Matthias. Minus for DeKeyser.

3rd Period 18:19 - Brendan Smith (tripping) and Derick Dorsett (high sticking): One-for-one penalty cal on another Canucks dive. No adjustment.

3rd Period 18:47 - Justin Abdelkader (roughing) and Alex Edler (roughing): No idea why Abdelkader got a penalty for being tackled. No adjustment.

The third line is really struggling to not be bad lately. Considering how they're also being more sheltered, something needs to change.

Final Say

I'm caught up between a regular amount of disappointment and the building annoyance that is wasted points in winnable games. The "not-that-bad-defense" is holding the team back.
