DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings today announced a preliminary roster for their 2015 Development Camp, which will be held at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City, Mich., from July 3-7. The camp kicks off on Friday, July 3 and features on-ice and off-ice workouts each day, including scrimmages on Saturday, July 4 and Tuesday, July 7. The camp roster currently stands at 43 players: 26 forwards, 13 defensemen and four goaltenders.
Each of Detroit's first-round picks from the last three NHL Entry Drafts are slated to be in attendance: Anthony Mantha (20th overall in 2013), Dylan Larkin (15th overall in 2014) and Evgeny Svechnikov (19th overall in 2015). Mantha followed up his final season of major junior hockey, where he was named the Canadian Hockey League Player of the Year after scoring 81 goals in a combined 81 regular-season and playoff games, by notching 33 points (15-18-33) in his first professional season with the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins. Larkin racked up 47 points (15-32-47) in 35 games at the University of Michigan in 2014-15 and was named the Big Ten's Rookie of the Year before turning pro with the Griffins. He also led the United States' bronze-medal winning team with five goals at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship and made his men's national team debut at 18-years-old during the 2015 World Championship in May. Svechnikov led the QMJHL's Cape Breton Eagles in points-per-game, with 78 points (32-46-78) in 55 games, earning a spot in the 2015 CHL Top Prospects Games as well as the QMJHL's All-Rookie Team at the end of the season.
In addition to Svechnikov, each of the team's selections from the 2015 NHL Entry Draft this past weekend at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla., are slated to be in attendance: defenseman Vili Saarijarvi, goaltender Joren van Pottelberghe, center Chase Pearson, defenseman Patrick Holway and left wing Adam Marsh. The camp also includes six players drafted in 2014, five drafted in 2013, four drafted in 2012 and 22 invitees from various major junior, collegiate and European or Asian clubs.
Notable players slated to attend include Andreas Athanasiou, who had 32 points (16-16-32) in 55 games as a 20-year-old rookie with the Griffins this season; Tyler Bertuzzi, who notched 43 goals and 98 points with the OHL's Guelph Storm in 2014-15; Axel Holmstrom, a former seventh-round pick who was named the Swedish Junior Hockey Player of the Year after leading Sweden's top professional league in playoff scoring as an 18 year old; Joe Hicketts, who earned a contract after attending the team's 2014 Development Camp and NHL Prospect Tournament and made Canada's 2015 gold-medal winning World Junior Team as the only defenseman on the roster who wasn't a first- or second-round pick; and Adam and Kevin Lidstrom, the sons of Red Wings legend Nicklas Lidstrom, who both play in Sweden.
