Senators Blog: Silver Seven

We appear to be standing upon the precipice staring into the abyss my fellow Red Wings faithful. After falling to the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 on Tuesday the Red Wings now sit tied for last place in the Atlantic division with those same Sabres. The Wings sit six points behind third place Boston and 10 points behind the second Wild Card spot. It is safe to say that things are looking bleak in Hockeytown.

Tonight, they will play the first of seven straight road games as the look to take on the somewhat surprising Ottawa Senators on a night when the Senators will raise Daniel Alfredsson’s number 11 to the rafters. Statistically Ottawa does not really look that much better than the Red Wings but unlike the Wings they have found ways to win and currently sit in second place in the Atlantic, six points up on fourth place Tampa Bay. Kyle Turris and Erik Karlsson lead them offensively and Mike Condon has filled in quite well for Craig Anderson, who is away from the game to be with his ailing wife.

The Wings are entering untracked territory needing wins desperately and in a hurry if they have any hope of challenging for a playoff spot, and as the case has been all season the hockey gods are taking no pity on them as they enter the most difficult portion of their schedule at the same time. Tonight is about as absolute a must win game for the Wings as any game at the end of December can be because the road only gets steeper and tougher to travel from here.
