With the Red Wings set to face off against the Rangers at 12:30 today, we don’t have much for a traditional gameday updates post, but today we’ve got a bigger update than usual for gameday.
blashill: kronwall in. goalie TBD.#NYRvsDET

No, not the goalie TBD thing, but Kronwall coming back in put the Red Wings at 24 healthy roster spots. Something had to give. It took us about 30 minutes to figure out what that something was (time spent thinking it was either another convenient injury or the Wings would do something unthinkable and temporarily assign either Mantha or Athanasiou because of their waiver exemptions), but we finally got the update:
drew miller on waivers at noon, ken holland confirms.#RedWings

The way the NHL looks at it, as soon as the guy goes on waivers, the team can use that spot to bring back an injured player, so they’ll technically still have 24 guys on the roster when they take on the Rangers, but won’t be violating the CBA by the way they’re doing this.
If Miller clears waivers, he will be eligible to be assigned to the AHL where $950,000 of his cap hit would come off the Red Wings books. If he’s claimed for his veteran PK abilities, then the Wings will see his entire contract cleared.
