Key Matchups (by J.J.)

Detroit’s forwards versus Arizona’s defensemen

This will be the strength-vs-strenth matchup of tonight’s game, as the Coyotes have a lethal D-corps led by Oliver Ekman-Larsson playing behind a LOT of promising youth, which will likely make mistakes that the Wings will need to take advantage of. The problem is that good defenders can make up for forward mistakes (not that we would know). Not being pile-driven into your own zone would be neat though.

Defensive Responsibility versus Scoring Goals

When Jeff Blashill moved Abdelkader up to play with Mantha & Larkin against Dallas, he did so because Ken Hitchcock was dictating a matchup which made Frk’s defensive liability stand out and made it harder for Larkin and Mantha to make space for the shooter. Arizona doesn’t really have that kind of matchup (although they will have last change), so it’s curious to see how much is lost on the offensive side of such a move versus what’s gained in defensive responsibility.
