A big week early on for the Red Wings has not been kind if not predictable. Against both Tampa Bay and Toronto, the two teams many believe will be the ones sitting on top of the Atlantic Division at the end of the season, the Wings fell behind early in the first period before rallying to within a goal in the second period but ultimately failing to complete the comeback and losing. The final game of the week for the Red Wings sees them welcome the Washington Capitals to Little Caesars for the first time.

The Capitals did not enjoy the same level of preseason hype as the Red Wings’ previous two opponents but they are a dangerous team and should prove a good test for the Red Wings. Alex Ovechkin has cooled a little after back to back hat tricks to open the season but he still leads the NHL is goals with 9 and is still one of if not the best goal scorer of his generation. That said, Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov continue to be the two most important forwards on the Capitals roster and will provide another difficult challenge for the Red Wings to contain. Braden Holtby is still as solid as he has been the last few seasons but with the blueline for the Capitals weaker than it has been in recent years there should be room for the Wings to create chances.

This is another game the Wings could find themselves in a big hole early if they cannot eliminate the egregious mistakes. No words as of yet regarding the lineup but we will have any updates that come out of the morning skate in the afternoon article.
