Going into October 14th, the Wings were 4-1 and tied for first place in the Atlantic Division. The general consensus was that the next three games would serve as measuring sticks for this year’s Red Wings. To say things could have gone better would be an understatement.

The Wings played a good game against the Lightning other than a few key mistakes. The problem is that those key mistakes led to Tampa Bay goals. And goals seem to win hockey games these days.

Against the Maple Leafs the Wings did seem to control much of the play but Toronto still managed to spring out to an early (and commanding) lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.

And in Friday’s game against the Capitals, the Wings seemed poised to break their two-game losing streak but surrendered a powerplay goal late and lost on an Ovechkin one-timer on a powerplay in overtime.

This seems like a good game to snap out of this weird funk we’ve found ourselves in over the past week. If the Wings show up to play and phase these critical mistakes out of their game, I like their chances tonight.
