The Red Wings are taking on the Isles today at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. It wasn’t so terribly long ago (2010-2011 season, if memory serves) that the Isles were the laughing stock of the league, but then they rattled off wins against both Pittsburgh and Detroit right around the holidays. Seven years later and the tables have turned quite a bit, with New York being one of the league’s best and Detroit playing the role of scrappy underdog.
To upset the Isles (18-12-3), the Wings (12-13-7) will need to find a way to focus throughout the full sixty minutes. Other teams can survive lapses in momentum, but this Detroit squad doesn’t have the personnel to survive those momentary lapses. They need to be sharper than the rest of the league just to hang around a playoff picture that is rapidly fading from view. And the Isles won’t make it easy; they’ve been a darn good team this year, at times leading the ultra-tight Metropolitan division. To make matters worse, they’ve been very good at home this year, only losing four times in 14 games at the Barclays Center. If Detroit can manage to shut down New York’s top line of Tavares (40 pts), Josh Bailey (40 pts), and Anders Lee (40 pts), then Detroit may be able to go toe-to-toe with the other line match-ups. But how to shut down Tavares’ line is one of the biggest questions in the NHL this year, so it’s a big if. It may fall to Tavares’ good friend and former teammate, Frans Nielsen, to do just that.
