Welcome to the newest WIIM Radio! This time around I’m joined by my friends Peter and Prashanth to go over all things Wings. Here’s what we got up to:
The team continues to be who we thought it would be - Detroit just isn’t going to be a consistent team, which is the lesson learned through the first two months of the season. They’re not as good as the 5-1 win against Winnipeg and not as bad as the 1-10 destruction at the hands of Montreal, but closer to the latter than the former.
Is the elephant in the room even listening? - Has the team “tuned out” Jeff Blashill? Is the team responding? What kind of meddling is going on behind the scenes? What good or bad to fire him at this point in the season? We discuss the challenges of evaluating what he should be doing with the kids.
The elephant-trainer in the room is responsible too - Ken Holland has orchestrated a team in trouble and we’ve talked about this at-length before, but it’s worth revisiting. The GM on the last year on his deal has got to go at this point, but what’s the order for doing it to help the Wings out as best you can?
Grading the Players - Hold your horses on the Justin Abdelkader hate because that boy is on quite the pace so far through his first 27 games. On the other side, Nick Jensen and Trevor Daley haven’t been bright spots for the Wings and a bunch of other guys are just kind of... there. At least Larkin and Mantha are up there leading the team in scoring.
Around the League/World - Russia isn’t allowed at the Olympics and we’ll wait to see how it all plays out with hockey participation, but the womens’ tourney is still promising to be incredible. Prashanth talks about how it’s insane how great Vegas continues to be despite the odds and their goalie injuries. Peter is enjoying the Edmonton media’s big full diaper problem.
Positivity Corner - We took some time out from our busy complaining to remind you life is beautiful sometimes.
Reader Questions - You asked some questions about the direction of the team, some ideal trades, and some cocktails; we answered all of the great queries.
Looking Ahead - Aside from this Saturday’s WIIM Meetup, we’ve got more games on the slate to talk about. We got out our crystal balls and came up with the projections you can take to the bank.
