Commissioner Gary Bettman today upheld the 10-game suspension that was assessed to Anaheim Ducks forward Antoine Vermette for violating Rule 40.3 (Physical Abuse of Officials) during NHL Game No. 840 in Minnesota on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
Reports indicated (not in this article) that the NHL and NHLPA had agreed on reducing the suspension to 5 games, but the officials association fought it, as well they should have.
The most interesting part of this story is coming from Nick Kypreos, so first go take a container of salt and dump it on your computer before reading:
“The thought is that Sheahan is having a miserable year,” Kypreos added, noting that the 25-year-old centreman has no goals and sits at minus-19 through 58 games.
While some may speculate that the Leafs could look for a discount given Shanahan and Babcock’s connection to Detroit, Kypreos shot down that idea.
“The feeling is, regardless of being goalless, that could cost you as much as a first-rounder if the Leafs want him,”Kypreos said.
If Holland can trade Sheahan for a first rounder...wow. At the same time, it’s always good to not get too happy or angry about trade rumors around this time of year. And again...Kypreos.
The article also discusses that the Wings may be trying to re-sign Smith. It appears to be based on the same information that Elliotte Friedman wrote about in his latest 30 Thoughts column.
Even if the Wings wanted to re-sign Smith (not that I’m saying we should), it would be disappointing to not at least add a pick by trading him as a rental.
Also, we shouldn’t re-sign him.
Additionally, if Sheahan could cost Toronto a first, what would Vanek bring back?
Here is an Ansar Khan mailbag post. Topics discussed are trading Mike Green, Sheahan’s trade value, and Dekeyser’s giveaways. The main topic, however, is the expansion draft. You could have gotten his picks a month ago by reading our article on the topic.
