The lottery will take place right before Pittsburgh vs Washington. Here is a full look at the odds for each team in the lottery (may look bad if you’re on a mobile device):
As you can see, the Red Wings have a 6.7% chance of landing the first overall pick, and a marginally better chance at getting 2nd or 3rd overall. While they are guaranteed a top-10 pick, they’re best odds are to land at 8th overall.
How it works
The first three picks will be decided on a drawing of ping-pong balls. The remaining teams will be sorted by points, picks 4-15.
So is it Nico or Nolan? Well, for the Wings, probably neither. I ran the Tankathon lottery simulator once (I swear, just once) just for the fun of it, because that’s all you get — one shot. Here’s what happened:
Keep in mind, these picks go in favor of draft rankings, and will likely look extremely different. That being said, Cale Makar would be a great pickup for the Red Wings. The only problem is that his production has come at a very low level in the Alberta Juniors. Not to mention the fact that I think the Wings are going to try and go for a “home run” player. What I mean by that is a guy with skill, and size. Juuso Valimaki fits the mold perfectly, if they go defense.
I’ll have your recap and instant reaction this evening, along with a miniature mock draft that goes over the top 15 picks. See you then!
