In Red Wings Land
Okay so this isn’t exactly a Red Wings story, but could Sam Bennett’s new deal with the Flames be a comparable for Andreas Athanasiou?
- Bennett is 21-years-old and put up 13 goals and 26 points in 81 games.
- Athanaisou is 23-years-old and put up 18 goals and 29 points in 64 games
The numbers are not an exact match, but close enough. The two year deal with a $1.95 AAV is just about what Ken Holland has reportedly offered the speedy forward.
Last I heard, but don't quote me LOL, is DET offered 2 x $1.9M. I get player feels he's worth more but no leverage: https://t.co/YSpkGoAR94— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) September 6, 2017
I still don’t think Athanasiou is going anywhere. The whole KHL thing is just AA trying to create leverage. Maybe it works and he gets a few more bucks and a cap hit just above Riley Sheahan’s $2.075M.
Around the League
From now on, a failed offside challenge will result in a two-minute penalty against the club asking for the review. It’s a potentially powerful infraction. Can you imagine a team in a tight game giving up a goal it thought was offside, losing the challenge, then having to withstand an immediate power-play opportunity? It’s going to make bench bosses much more wary — and ratchet up the pressure on video coaches.
I dig this. It adds another element of strategy for coaches and it’ll eliminate those annoying, long delays on b.s. offsides reviews that are so close because someone’s foot may or may not be half a centimeter off the ice.
Another big rule change noted in the article is that teams cannot call a timeout after icing the puck. Tired defenders means more goals. More goals, more fun.
Let’s Go Red Wings.
