We’re back home and back in action tonight as the Red Wings welcome familiar face Valtteri Filppula and his rag-tag group of friends the New York Islanders back into their city. Detroit is coming off an emotional roller-coaster win on Thursday where they smoked Toronto for two periods, gave up a 4-1 lead, and then won in overtime on a beautiful Dylan Larkin breakaway goal.

How have the Isles been lately?

New York also last played on Thursday and got their fish sticks fried by the Penguins 6-2, handing them their 2nd straight loss. They’re 4-5-1 in their last 10 games and hover one point behind Detroit in the Wild Card standings (with two games in hand).

On the season, The Isles have looked about as consistent as you’d expect from a team battling in the same area of the conference as the Red Wings have. Their longest win streak this season is five games spanning the end of October/beginning of November and their longest losing streak has been four.

Bottom line

With new coach Barry Trotz installing his system, the Isles score less than the Red Wings, but also give up fewer goals. It feels very much like we’re going to be playing against a team that feels very similar to the ghosts of Red Wings past in the Babcock-to-Blashill transition years. The Isles have skill, but generally seem to try to win games 1-0 or 2-1. Fun!
