Since it’s been a while, here is a reminder of what this organization does:
The Concussion Legacy Foundation was founded on June 14, 2007, by Chris Nowinski, Ph.D., and Dr. Robert Cantu. After seeking help from Dr. Cantu for his own post-concussion symptoms, Chris’ view about concussions was completely changed. He discovered he had never been taught the signs and symptoms of a concussion, so he didn’t report them or even know he had them while playing football at Harvard. He wasn’t told the value of resting after a concussion, nor was he warned of the long-term effects. Chris decided to bring the information Dr. Cantu provided him into the public eye, and set a goal to change how concussions were understood and handled in sports.
We had 33 people make pledges based on how Red Wings players performed this year. For example, I pledged $2 per goal or $1 per point, whichever was higher for Frans Nielsen. Since he didn’t have as good a year as either of us would have liked, I will be donating my minimum amount pledged of $75.
Based on the team’s performance and/or the minimum pledged from each person, we should be donating around $2600 from our community to this worthwhile cause. So, first off, thanks to everyone who pledged to support our charity challenge. Those of you who read the Franzen family update know how important this cause is to the Red Wings community, as well as the NHL as a whole.
Secondly, if you pledged at the beginning of the season, you should have received an email recently with information on how to complete your pledge. Please make sure you follow the directions so that we can verify donations for our final tally. If you didn’t receive an email, please email me or JJ at the email addresses in our profile. Also, if you donated $25 or more, you will be eligible for our Red Wings jersey drawing, so following the directions will ensure that you are entered for that.
We’ll have one last follow-up post later in June with the final amount donated and the winner of the Red Wings jersey!
