UPDATE:

We now know the conditions of the Russo trade.

In a late transaction, the Red Wings announce they have traded defenseman Robbie Russo to the Arizona Coyotes for a conditional 7th round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.

The Wings signed Russo out of the NCAA back in August of 2015. Since then, he has had great success with the Grand Rapids Griffins, but never found his place with the Red Wings. We assume the condition on the draft pick will be if he re-signs with the Coyotes or not. Either way, the Red Wings are freeing up a roster spot — at a position that has long been log-jammed.

So as of now, the Red Wings have freed up two spots on the blue line after this trade, and electing to not re-sign Xavier Ouellet.

More from the Red Wings

After selecting 10 players at the 2018 NHL Entry Draft at the American Airlines Center in Dallas this weekend, the Red Wings now hold up to 11 picks at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, owning their own selection in each round in addition to the NY Islanders’ second-round pick (via Vegas), Buffalo’s fifth-round pick, Columbus’ fifth-round pick and the conditional seventh-round choice from Arizona.
