We are only a couple days away from the official kickoff of “Free Agent Frenzy” on July 1. Here are a few articles for your reading pleasure.
In Red Wings Land
Detroit Red Wings brass on defenseman prospect Dennis Cholowski: "He wants to make the team. He wants to knock a guy out of the box"
I know it can be cliche, but I love reading something like this. Good luck to him because the competition will likely be stiff for spots.
The Red Wings drafted Seth Barton at 81st. He wasn't expecting that. June 28, 2018.
A nice video of Barton talking about how it felt to be drafted by Detroit
Around the NHL
A third and final volume of articles, notes, commentary and more related to the free agency of Islanders captain John Tavares.
The indefatigable Dan Saraceni updates his magnum opus for what may be the final time. For long suffering Islanders fans like my friend Dan, I really hope that Tavares stays on Long Island. I think that’s the most likely outcome, and I think it’s a lot higher than 50/50. That being said, the taste of the state of the organization over his career is likely hard to overcome with a couple months of good decisions. If he doesn’t stay with the Islanders, I’d bet on San Jose as the most likely team. Either way, we should know soon.
Sportsnet analytics writers Dimitri Filipovic and Andrew Berkshire look at two bargains and risky additions each out of this year's UFA pool.
If we are going to sign a free agent or two, let’s stay with the bargains and away from the risky additions.
The John Tavares meetings are over, Calvin De Haan is generating interest, the Leafs are taking calls on their AHL goalies and an update on Artemi Panarin.
Eliotte Friedman has some info on the chatter leading up to July 1. Nothing specifically about the Red Wings, but in my opinion that’s good. If we didn’t have the young defensemen competing for spots, I’d be looking to see if we could sign de Haan to a reasonable deal. Of course with the pickings slim for free agent defensemen, he will likely get far more than he should.
