It looks like we know what’s going on with Mike Green and his fatigue issues. Jeff Blashill updated his veteran defenseman’s status today.
#RedWings Blashill said Mike Green has a virus that is attacking his liver and will see infectious disease specialist.— Dana Wakiji (@Dwakiji) September 21, 2018
#RedWings Blashill: "(Green's) not available right now. He’s got a virus that attacked his liver, so he’s seen an infectious disease person today and we should know more here in the next little bit. I don’t know how long he’s going to be out. I don’t know the totality of it."— Dana Wakiji (@Dwakiji) September 21, 2018
I’m not a doctor, but I’m guessing this isn’t ideal. You have to imagine Green isn’t going to be ready to start the season. Even if he was declared healthy and cleared by doctors, he’ll probably need a week or so to get back up to speed for NHL action.
So what does this mean for the Red Wings?
It means they’re probably going to lose their best offensive defenseman to begin the year and it opens up another opportunity for some new blood to step up and earn a roster spot. So far, Dennis Cholowski has impressed against the Penguins and Libor Sulak played well last night against the Blackhawks. Those two are in a battle with Joe Hicketts and Filip Hronek for a spot on the roster. Now, we may very well see two of them on the ice October 4 when the Blue Jackets visit Detroit for the season opener.
