With the preseason now in the rearview mirror, we await the finalization of the NHL rosters before the regular season #hype can truly begin. But we here at WIIM have a most excellent tradition brought to you by yours truly. I might be a little biased.
If you just clicked on this article without reading the title, I’ll tell you:
That’s right, it’s the return of the Winging It In Motown Predictions Contest!
*confetti bursts from hidden cannons, grandiose music blares from speakers disguised as ugly statuettes*
If you’re a Star Wars fan, you might be able to guess by the title that this is the fourth installment in the series! Yes, I know, it was technically the first movie, work with me here. I’m trying to be ~relevant~ with what’s hot these days.
But first I must extend a most sincere apology for once again delaying the results of last season’s contest (hello nursing school, you are a fun but insanely busy beast!). Therefore, I am here to present to you the winners of the 2017-2018 WIIM Predictions Contest.
first SECOND! There are just a few fun facts about last year’s competition I’d like to share.
Over the course of the 82-game season, there were a total of 3,024 total predictions made by 240 individual prognosticators for a total of 3,731 points awarded. However, a staggering 122 people made only one prediction. That’s over half! So taking those people out of the count, the remaining 118 people made 2,902 predictions, averaging out to about 12 per person.
As fans of a team who has plenty of “every-dayers” (aka those guys who aren’t necessarily so good at the hockey thing but boy do they
try really hard physically show up every day), y’all gotta step up your games. And I mean that literally, step up the number of games you’re making predictions! Come to the site, get your Morning Skate reading in, and drop those guesses in the Google Doc at the bottom. After all, the winners get exclusive internet-only metallic cephalopods to brag to all their friends about!
Speaking of showing up every day, I’d like to give some shoutouts to those in our community who literally came forth and guessed for all 82 games. A total of 15 people missed 5 games or fewer last season, which is great! Six of them hit at least 80 games, but only two got that A-plus perfect score: Kleinow and RawrPawr! You two are the recipients of the Iron Octopus for your ability to withstand the grind of the long season and make a guess every game day. mdruh12 and Red Wing139, you were both so close, but must have had the flu (or the dreaded Detroit groin pull) and missed just one game.
Well folks, it’s about time to wrap this baby up, which means it’s time to announce your winners and the recipient of the title of Chef För Alla Chefer, aka #SwedishMafia Boss (can that even still be a thing now that Henrik Zetterberg has been LTIR’ed into the ether? *sobs*).
Coming in third place, the commenter taking home the Bronze Octopus is mdruh12 with 115 points! You may have missed that one game, but you definitely made up for it.
In second place, with 125 points is none other than RawrPawr! You were the co-winner of the Bronze Octopus in 2016-2017, but you now hold sole custody of this year’s Silver Octopus in addition to your Iron Octopus! #twinsies
And finally, we have the moment you’ve all been waiting for. Just barely beating out our runner-up, with 126 points is…
GordyOrr27!! Congratulations! You are the winner of the 2017-2018 Gold Octopus, and after taking out the previous head of the Detroit Swedish syndicate old man hockey, you are now the holder of the title Chef För Alla Chefer, and top prognosticator at Winging It In Motown! Your title defense starts now!
Another gigantic THANK YOU to all of you out there making those predictions that make this annual project possible. It was another tough season, but I think I can speak for most of us that this year is shaping up to have some exciting and promising times, even if that coveted return to the playoffs is still a little ways away.
So strap on those thinking caps, stock up your sports cave fridges, and let’s get ready to DO THAT HOCKEY!!
And of course…
