Red Wings Top 25 Under 25: Filip Hronek ranks at 7

The first “Filip” the Red Wings had is starting to show signs of being a Top 4 D-man, when will it be his time to shine?

Texas Stars

Now is the fun part of our T25U25, because we start hitting the players mostly everyone knows. Filip Hronek is arguably the Red Wings top defensive prospect, and the former 2nd round pick is inching closer and closer to displaying his talents with the big club. While it may not be for another year, Hronek is only 20 and put up 39 points in 67 games for the Griffins last year. The two-way defender will obviously start the year in Grand Rapids, but could we possibly even get a glimpse of the Czech defender in the NHL before years end.

Position: Defense
Shoots: Right
H/W: 6’0”/170
Born: November 2, 1997
Birthplace: Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic
Drafted: 2016, 2nd Round (53rd overall)
Current Team: Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL)
2017-2018: 67 GP, 11 G, 28 A, +24

Hronek has really been gaining momentum in the Red Wings system since he was drafted in 2016. One of the biggest impacts he has made was with his play at the World Championships this past year. He had 3 points in 8 games for the Czech national team, but quickly became one of the best defenseman on the team. Jiri Fischer accounted on his time with the national team,

Fischer went on to talk about his play with Grand Rapids this past season too and what he needs to continue to work on to make the big club. They want Hronek to be able to be a stand out, puck-carrying defenseman as well as being able to run a power play, which is good because both skills suit his game perfectly.

It’s pretty obvious that Hronek has a chance to be a stud for the Red Wings down the road. He’s only 20 and is already beginning to flirt with the NHL. He continues to get better defensively, which is the most important part of his development, as well as continually adds to his offensive game as well. He needs to get bigger and stronger, but that obviously will come with time. It really comes down to being a waiting game for Hronek, and since the Wings already have 6 defenseman signed through this season, that may be okay. Besides, Joe Hicketts is likely the “next man up” among the D in Grand Rapids, so there’s no reason to rush Hronek. However, don’t fully right off Hronek quite yet in 2018-19, hopefully he continues to develop and possibly even gets a shot in Detroit this season.
