In Red Wings Land
Ken Holland: Detroit Red Wings to extend Jeff Blashill’s deal | Freep
Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland all but stated coach Jeff Blashill will be extended.
The subject came up Monday afternoon as Holland spoke after the trade deadline had passed. Blashill is in the fourth and final year of his contract, and while the Wings are going to miss the playoffs for a third straight season, the organization likes how hard the team plays under Blashill, how the team is in most games, and the growth shown by young players such as Dylan Larkin, Andreas Athanasiou and Tyler Bertuzzi.
A contract extension had been expected, and Holland essentially confirmed that will happen.
Maybe it’s just me, but that headline seems a bit misleading. It makes it seem like it’s officially a done deal.
Either way, I’m not sure how I feel yet about the idea of Blashill returning. I do agree he’s done well helping the young players develop, but is that enough to bring him back after three straight losing seasons? How much of that is his fault and how much of that is Holland’s fault for putting together a terrible roster?
Honestly, if Steve Yzerman really is going to take over the Red Wings this summer, I’d rather just let him make the decision.

Winners and losers of the 2019 NHL trade deadline | ESPN
The Red Wings were kind of both winners and losers of the NHL trade deadline in this one. They get a bit of a stick tap for getting some value for Gus Nyquist, but also come up a bit short because of the terrible goalie market.
