In Red Wings Land

Steve Yzerman’s impact on Red Wings won’t be felt until next off-season | MLive

Next summer is going to be fun for us fans. The Red Wings will finally be done with the likes of Mike Green, Trevor Daley and Jonathan Ericsson and there’s going to be some cap space to play with in free agency. Not to mention the Wings will likely land another really high draft pick.

Now, there are some really important RFAs to re-sign, but Yzerman is going to have a lot more flexibility with the roster. Plus, he’ll have a better idea of which players on the team are actually worth keeping around or not. And apparently, we might not necessarily have to wait until next offseason either.

Yzerman will be active during the season.

The team has stockpiled young forwards, some of whom are proven NHL players (Dylan Larkin, Mantha, Athanasiou, Bertuzzi) and others still in the early stages of development (Evgeny Svechnikov, Michael Rasmussen, Filip Zadina, Joe Veleno, Taro Hirose). Yzerman might look to package one or two with other assets for a young defenseman.
