Detroit Red Wings mailbag: Will Steve Yzerman surprise at 2020 draft

“Stevie shocked many last year by selecting Seider at 6 overall. What are the chances he does the same this year and selects a player like Yaroslav Askarov?"

Repeat after me. “Drafting a goalie early in the first round rarely works out.”

One of the more interesting pieces of memorabilia I own is a puck my brother got for me. It is a New York Islanders puck signed by Roberto Luongo. You may remember that they traded Luongo (picked fourth overall) and drafted Rick DiPietro 1st overall.

Here’s a list of other goalies drafted in the the top 10:

Carey Price (5th)
Al Montoya (6th)
Marc-Andre Fleury (1st)
Kari Lehtonen (2nd)
Pascal Leclaire (8th)

With the talent available at forward, especially at center where Detroit will be picking, taking Askarov will be an even bigger swing than taking Seider.

Only 3 more months of talk about who we will pick.
