It’ll be at least one more year in Detroit for Sam Gagner.

The Red Wings announced late Saturday morning that they gave the 31-year-old center a one-year contract. Elliotte Friedman reports the deal is worth $850k:

Gagner had a short stint in Detroit last season after the team acquired him from the Oilers in the Andreas Athanasiou trade. In 10 games, Gagner potted one goal, but played a significant role on special teams. With this signing, the Red Wings get a little more stability down the middle, and a perfectly capable top-six player for a low price.

It’s tough to envision where GM Steve Yzerman will go with the rest of his offseason, with the 2020 NHL Draft just a handful of days away, there are a lot of expiring contracts, meaning there will be a lot of holes to fill. Is a bargain deal for a guy like Sam Gagner a precursor to a high price-tag signing, or a series of signings like these? Either way, Yzerman clearly isn’t done.
