Day one is in the books for the 2025 NHL Draft. It was a weird one. This new format where all of the GMs are away from the hosting venue is clunky at best. The whole event on Friday night took far too long. Good news is that day two always goes fairly quickly.
How to Watch Day 2 of the 2025 NHL Draft

Solid Night for Detroit
I know the fanbase is far from stable right now, but I think everyone should feel good about Detroit’s pick at no. 13. Carter Bear is an excellent prospect — certainly seems like an “Yzerman” like player. Very high ceiling for this young man. Check out this interview with Bear’s coach in Everett about what kind of player he is.

Will he be in the NHL next season? No, but that’s okay. There’s a lot of, well, let’s say unrest around the Red Wings faithful. Many are getting tired of taking players that have a few years of development before they make an NHL debut, but that’s just what the NHL Draft is. This isn’t the NFL where a team can select 3+ starters in one draft cycle alone. You’re lucky to get one, two, MAYBE three players who make the jump from junior hockey to the NHL every year. Those players are always gone by the time Detroit’s pick rolls around. It is what it is!
Detroit’s got picks in every round today, barring a trade. Steve Yzerman has moved around his pics in the later rounds before, I reckon that will be on the cards today.
Red Wings Picks Today
2.44
3.75 (via NYR)
3.76
4.119 (via Tampa)
5.140
6.172
7.204
7.211 (via St. Louis)
Eight picks! That’s a lot. I wonder if both of those third-rounders will be in play. This draft is not terribly deep, so moving up at this point should be worth it. If the Wings keep all of their picks, there’s really no need to draft by need. Take the best prospect available.
What to Expect from WIIM Today
Planning to have articles for the picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Rounds 4-7 will be compiled into one. We hope you’ll stop by and read!
