Alt-right hate group uses Red Wings logo, team issues statement

If you’ve been on Twitter today, or in the past day or so, you may be aware of what is going on in Charlottesville, Virginia. If not, what is essentially happening is a massive neo-nazi rally. Among the people marching to promote hate, bigotry, and other things that continue to make our crumbling society terrible, there is a group who call themselves the “Detroit Right Wings” and of course, their emblem is a photoshopped version of the Winged Wheel:

Before I go any further — this has nothing to do with our love for the team, it has nothing to do with defacing the “sacred” Winged Wheel, and it certainly has nothing to do with copyright issues. This is about denouncing hate. Using a logo in this manner is not only irresponsible, but it’s disrespectful to those fans who do NOT associate themselves with such conduct. What is being promoted here is wrong.

Anyways, this is not a new thing. Katie Strang pointed out that there three neo-nazi groups based right here in Metro Detroit. Presumably, the “Right Wings” were/are a part of them, but we have no way of knowing.

In response to everything that happened, the team swiftly issued a statement via Twitter:

Strang added on Twitter that the team is considering legal action against the group for the “disturbing demonstration.”

I’m happy the team made a statement with the platform that they have, but part of me still weeps over what is happening right before my eyes.

UPDATE:

I’m not going to sit here and go on a detailed tirade, because I shouldn’t have to. If anything about what the Red Wings have done in response upsets you, then I firmly ask you to never come back to this website again. Winging it in Motown is a community where all are welcome and accepted — so long as hatred, racism, sexism, and all other forms of bigotry are miles away. Anyone who brings it here will be immediately banned without question or consideration.

I hope that what Winging it in Motown is for many people is a safe haven for our readers. We pride ourselves on community here, and we’ll do whatever it takes to push hate and bigotry out.

If you ever feel like you’re being mistreated within our forum here (or even outside of it), please send a tweet, email, Facebook, or whatever means of messaging you have over to me. What the Wings have done today is a small spark, but always remember that all it takes is a small spark to start a large fire.

Be good to one another.
