CSSI Analysis: Red Wings 2 – Blue Jackets 4

Detroit did not get prepared to play against the worst team in the league and got a reminder that it still takes effort to beat the worst team in the best league in the world. I hate writing up games like this.

Here’s the bright side. Detroit went 2-for-4 on the power play and kept the Jackets scoreless on three tries with the man advantage. It felt at a point that the Wings were looking to get gifted a power play and then didn’t push harder when it didn’t come. It took an 18-9 shots advantage in the third period for Detroit to even the shot chart at 31.

Goalie Ratings

There was not much about Ty Conklin’s game I liked in this one. Sure, the entire team played like crap, but Conklin didn’t exactly get beaten on Datsyukian dekes. The Jackets just fired pucks through him. Conklin will get a -1 in the head-to-head for being outplayed by Allen York and will get a -2.5 overall for a performance I feel was detrimental to the team.

Scoring and plus/minus analysis after the jump

The Goals

1st Period 06:26 – Columbus Goal: Vinny Prospal (wrist shot) from Rick Nash
Brad Stuart tries to finesse a pass from his own blue line to Valtteri Filppula on the far side (Finesse? Oh shit, I’ve been watching too much Emrick…). The Jackets pick it off and gain the zone. Nash drops for Prospal at the top of the zone and the Jackets’ forward skates to about eight feet above the circle before throwing a wrister that Conklin deflects straight up in the air. The defense jockeys to get under it, but Prospal is the first with his stick on the puck as he follows up his shot. Prospal pops it back on net as soon as it lands and sees it go off Kronwall’s skate around Conklin and in. This is a bad goal for Conklin thanks to this shit-circus rebound. Minuses for Kronwall, Stuart, Hudler, Zetterberg, and Filppula will be cleared. However, Stuart will get back two full minuses. Not only does he flub the pass (-1.5), but he’s the one who watches as Prospal gets to the rebound (-0.5). Kronwall has a bit to do with this too and will get a half-minus for the net-front coverage.

1st Period 14:17 – Columbus Goal: Derek Dorsett (backhand) from Ryan Johansen
Zetterberg wins a board battle deep in the Columbus zone, but has a backhand centering pass to a cutting Jiri Hudler go off the skate of Filppula and roll to the top of the zone. Kronwall wins the race to the puck as he tries to dump it bcak in, but sees his pass attempt hit Ryan Johansen and bounce out to center where the Jackets’ forward chases with Brad Stuart for the puck. Stu is a little flat-footed going against Johansen, who is already moving, but his play to cut in front of his man and kick the puck away backfires when he misses the puck and Johansen keeps skating to get through him. This creates a 2-on-0 with Dorsett that Johansen turns into a breakaway for the Little Dorse. Whatshisface gives Conklin a pedestrian forehand-to-backhand move before roofing it over the last guy I’d ever trust in a shootout. Hudler, Zetterberg, and Filppula will be cleared on this play, as they’re trying to create offense in the offensive zone (a noble pursuit, I know). Kronwall will get an extra minus for the turnover while Stuart will get an extra minus for the coverage on Johansen.

1st Period 16:23 – Detroit Goal (PP): Henrik Zetterberg (Jack Johnson sucks) from Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Holmstrom
The PenaltyBrett Lebda (hooking): White calms a play down during a change and feeds it to Lidstrom, who gets it to Datsyuk cutting up the middle, who gets it to Bertuzzi getting a step on his man on the wing. This leads to Lebda hooking Bert. Datsyuk, Bertuzzi, and Lidstrom will each get a plus while White will get a half-plus for making this play happen.
The Wings get a keep-in by Kronwall on a dump-around attempt by Boyce. Kronner goes to Homer in the corner, who goes to Datsyuk behind the net, who carreis to the opposite corner. Pavel throws a backhand pass toward Zetterberg cutting through the middle. Z lifts Boyce’s stick to get to it and throws it at the front of the net. Here, it bounces off of Jack Johnson’s skate in front and goes in. Kronwall will get the third assist while Homer will pick up a bonus non-touch assist for his net-front presence. Zetterberg will get a plus for the stick-lift on Boyce to keep possession.

Penalty Adjustment: 2:28 into the 2nd, Cory Emmerton goes off for high-sticking Jared Boll, who stays down like he’s trying to decide whether he has the strength to keep on living after barely getting clipped. I know that Stuart was high-sticked earlier with no call and that’s stupid, but Emmerton has to control his lumber. Minus for Emmerton.

2nd Period 14:30 – Columbus Goal: Derick Brassard (wrist shot) from Nikita Nikitin and RJ Umberger
Brett Lebda rushes into the Wings’ zone and throws a puck on net from the low corner that bounces out of the zone where Umberger pokes it to Nikitin to transition back toward the Wings’ zone (say “zone” one more time, motherfucker; I dare you!). Nikitin takes stock as the Jackets change and sees a great opportunity when he catches Ian White initially take a few steps toward his own bench before thinking better of changing. This slight move gives Brassard room to get behind White and gives Nikitin room to hit him with the outlet to spring him on the breakaway. Brassard doesn’t even bother with a deke, choosing instead to just put it through the five-hole for what would be the game-winner. Kyle Quincey will have his minus cleared here and Cleary will have his halved. Miller and Abdelkader keep theirs for not being in that lane. Ian White will pick up an extra minus. He’s either got to communicate that he’s going off or just not let Brassard behind him. Of course, if you were watching Ed Olczyk brutalize our language on NBCSN, you might have gotten the idea that White was more concerned with the beauty of the puck than trying to end a 1:18-long shift.

2nd Period 15:57 – Columbus Goal: RJ Umberger (wrist shot) from Cam Atkinson and Nikita Nikitin
Less than 90 seconds later, the Jackets score on the rush again. Datsyuk lets Brassard trap him to the boards for a long time before throwing a forearm at him to make some space. Datsyuk skates up to the top of the zone before going to White at the middle of the point. White carries to the left point before making a backhand pass to Lidstrom at the half-boards. Nick doesn’t control this pass cleanly and it bounces over his stick to Nikitin, who feeds it back past Lidstrom to Atkinson, who exits the zone with Umberger joining in what is now a 2-on-1. White takes away the lane, but it doesn’t matter as Umberger wrists it through one of the billion holes Conklin leaves him to shoot at. Cleared minuses for Franzen and Bertuzzi on this one. Datsyuk will get an extra minus for leaving his coverage at the top of the zone (which is his responsibility as Lidstrom jumps in and White is technically covering Lidstrom’s point at this time). White will get a half-minus for a bad pass, but most of the turnover is on Lidstrom, who will get one minus for the turnover and another half-minus for the coverage.

Penalty Adjustment: At 3:43 into the third, Kyle Quincey gets a boarding call as he hits the number 9 of Colton Gillies. This is a dumbass play by Quincey and will get him a minus.

3rd Period 09:34 – Detroit Goal (PP): Niklas Kronwall (slap shot) from Nicklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk
The Penalty Aaron Johnson (high sticking): No adjustment for this high-sticking call.
Datsyuk wins a faceoff back to Kronwall, who steps to the top of the umbrella on the power play setup. Kronwall goes to Lidstrom at the top of the circle, who skates to just outside the dot before going back to Kronwall following him up. Nik Jr. steps into the one-timer ten feet above the circle and York never sees it go top corner through the Tomas Holmstrom screen. Kronwall will get a half-assist for the give-and-go. Datsyuk will get a half-plus for the clean faceoff win. Holmstrom will get a screener’s assist.

Penalty Non-Adjusments
1st Period 08:10 – Brad Stuart (roughing): Stuart gets run and does a half-second headlock on Dorsett, which is about one-fifth as bad as Jack Johnson punching Valtteri Filppula in the face previously. No adjustment
1st Period 10:03 – Jared Boll: On the power play, Boll leaps into Kronwall and takes a penalty. Bad play by Boll
2nd Period 17:27 – Vinny Prospal and Jiri Hudler (roughing): Matching minors for losing their cool. If Hudler doesn’t draw the even-up, this would easily be a minus for him, since he started it.
2nd Period 19:01 – Derek Dorsett (goalie interference): Dorsett skates directly into Conklin and goes to the box. Idiot.

Bonus Ratings

-1 to Pavel Datsyuk: He didn’t have it in this game at even strength.
-1 to Brad Stuart: He didn’t really improve from a bad first period, he just got lucky enough to not be responsible for two more goals.
-1 to Drew Miller: Miller committed a cardinal sin in the 2nd period when he turned a puck over at the blue line after two icing calls. The team was changing behind him and Columbus got a good scoring chance. That’s not the whole reason for this minus, but it’s most of it. You simply cannot do that.

Honorable Mentions:
Nyquist sure had a good five minutes, didn’t he?
