CSSI Analysis: Western Conference Quarterfinals Game 2: Red Wings 5 – Ducks 4 (OT)

Well this game will probably make me angry by the time Saturday night rolls around and I have to face the fact that the Wings blew a three-goal lead in the third period and had to get bailed out by a dumb penalty by Sheldon Souray. The series heads to Detroit tied 1-1.

The story of the game was early goals and power play markers helped. The Wings were 3-for-6 while holding the Ducks to 1-for-5. Shots were even at 32 apiece.

Goalie Ratings

Neither goalie had a particularly good night. Hiller just gave up his goals spread out over a longer period. I’m going to call the head-to-head even. Overall, Jimmy Howard made the game harder for the Wings than it should have been. The guys in front of him got caught running around a lot too, but he needed to make better save attempts. Howard will get a -1 overall.

The Goals

1st Period 00:48 – Detroit Goal: Justin Abdelkader (wrist) from Pavel Datsyuk
The Wings get on the board early as a turnover in the neutral zone leads to an Abdelkader snipe from just above the slot. Franzen is going to earn back his plus on this one as well as another half-plus. He tips the outlet which helps lead to the change in possession before he goes off for Zetterberg, who will lose his plus. DeKeyser will get a non-touch assist and a bonus plus for his step-up to finish the change of possession. Datsyuk will also get a bonus plus for a brilliant touch to get it to Abby moving through center with speed.

1st Period 04:20 – Detroit Goal: Damien Brunner (wrist shot) from Kyle Quincey
Detroit makes it 2-0 early as a turnover by Selanne ends up in the back of Anaheim’s net when Quincey pokes it to Brunner for a quick shot past Hiller from right out front. There’s a lot of good in this shift. Brunner will get a bonus plus and self-assist for some great forechecking work. Henrik Zetterberg will get a plus despite changing about 15 seconds before the goal because he’s really the one who starts the play by preventing an Anaheim clear. Kyle Quincey will get a bonus assist and bonus plus for two great plays to step up and prevent Teemu Selanne from exiting the zone. Brendan Smith has a key keep-in which will earn him an assist. Gustav Nyquist also gets a bonus half-plus for a step-up on Teemu which leads to another failed zone clear for the Ducks.

2nd Period 01:04 – Detroit Goal (PP): Johan Franzen (wrist shot) from Damien Brunner and Pavel Datsyuk
Detroit gets their third as the Wings catch Anaheim being too aggressive. Datsyuk chucks the puck to Franzen on the doorstep. Brunner comes in for the rebound, but is stopped by Hiller. Mule is there to jam the loose puck under Hiller from in the crease. Zetterberg will get the third assist and Kronwall the fourth. Z and Datsyuk do a lot of the work on puck retrieval and entry. So… good job to them.

2nd Period 10:53 – Anaheim Goal (PP): Saku Koivu (wrist shot) from Teemu Selanne and Francois Beauchemin
Anaheim gets on the board on the power play as Selanne chucks a low shot from the top of the left circle that bounces off Howard’s pad and right to Koivu on the back door to put home the rebound. Smith will get a coverage minus. This is essentially a pass from Selanne that pays off because Smith doesn’t have his man tied up.

3rd Period 00:20 – Detroit Goal (PP): Johan Franzen (nuts) from Henrik Zetterberg and Damien Brunner
Detroit doesn’t waste a lot of time proving Johan Franzen’s balls are resilient. 20 seconds in he slides the puck under Hiller for the Wings’ fourth. This is just some good skating by the Wings. Kronwall will get the third assist. I’m going to give a half-plus to Brunner. He makes a great play to enter the zone with speed and then drop it to an area for Zetterberg.

3rd Period 07:50 – Anaheim Goal: Ryan Getzlaf (backhand) from Kyle Palmieri and Bryan Allen
Anaheim gets one back as Getzlaf gets the puck out from behind the net and backhands it through Howard’s armpit. This is a bad goal. By rule, minuses are cleared for Kronwall, DeKeyser, Franzen, Filppula, and Cleary. However, DeKeyser will earn back a minus for losing Getzlaf. Both Kronwall and Cleary will also get half-minuses. Detroit wins a faceoff cleanly and these two combine to give possession back to the Ducks. Kronwall is victimized a bit by a Palmieri cross-check which allows the puck to get to Getzlaf, but he’s got to take a pass behind the net better.

3rd Period 12:31 – Anaheim Goal: Kyle Palmieri (wrist shot) from Nick Bonino and Bobby Ryan
Anaheim pulls within one with a goal just after the power play ends. Palmieri gets it in the right faceoff dot and fires it in past Howard. This is essentially a PP goal, since Quincey did not get back in the play before it was scored. Minuses will be cleared for Quincey, Kronwall, Smith, Andersson, and Eaves. However, Emmerton will earn back his minus for a failed clear while the PP was still ongoing that led to the Ducks keeping possession. Andersson will also get a half-minus. He makes a play on Bobby Ryan on the half-boards which is too aggressive. This draws Emmerton to have to make a play on Bonino in the middle of the ice. This frees Palmieri where he’s at.

3rd Period 17:38 – Anaheim Goal: Bobby Ryan (tip-in) from Cam Fowler and Saku Koivu
The Ducks tie it late in the third as they run circles around the Wings in their own zone. Ryan runs a give-and-go into the low slot where he redirects the return pass short-side on Howard. This is another bad goal by Howard, who leaves his post uncovered for no apparent reason. Ryan does not have a good shot at the far side post and there’s no Duck standing on the back door. Minuses cleared for Smith, Quincey, Andersson, Emmerton, and Eaves. Andersson will earn back a minus. When Fowler enters the zone 1-on-4, he’s the guy who needs to put a body on him and he doesn’t. Smith will earn a turnover minus for turning deeper into his own zone after the turnover and then giving the puck back. Smith will then earn another minus for failing to attack Fowler after the Ryan pass. He can’t let this lane be open and he does. Emmerton will get a minus for covering nothing. He’s got to pick up Ryan because there’s nobody else on the back door and even if there were, Ryan is the significantly more-pressing matter.

Overtime 01:21 – Detroit Goal (PP): Gustav Nyquist (wrist shot) from Valtteri Filppula and Daniel Cleary
Nyquist ends it with a quick back-door finish on a great feed from Filppula after some fancy-pants dangling low in the Ducks’ zone. Nyquist will earn a self-assist. He has a zone entry and shot which almost ends it earlier. The pass to Filppula is the smartest thing number 11 has done this decade and will get Cleary half a bonus assist. Filppula will earn a full bonus assist for a dazzling dangle down low which almost killed me because he didn’t shoot it. I’m glad he didn’t. Fuck me.

Penalty Adjustments (pluses and minuses only)

1st Period 09:40 – Damien Brunner (interference): Soft call? Sure, a bit. But Brunner has to avoid contact here and he takes Koivu’s legs out from under him. Minus for Brunner.
1st Period 11:19Patrick Eaves (high-sticking): Easy call on Eaves who misses a stick-lift and tries a face-lift on Fowler instead. Minus for Eaves.

2nd Period 04:19 – Bryan Allen (high-sticking): Zetterberg gets a plus. This is basically a hook that got called a high-stick because it was also that. Z earns it with great forechecking work.
2nd Period 09:10 – Valtteri Filppula (hooking): Minus for Filppula on trying to eliminate a stick in the neutral zone and hooking his guy instead.
2nd Period 11:37 – Henrik Zetterberg (holding): Zetterberg gets a minus for getting too aggressive on the forecheck and holding Bryan Allen.

3rd Period 02:04 – Teemu Selanne (roughing): Danny DeKeyser will get a plus here. He hits Selanne shoulder-to-shoulder and then doesn’t react at all when the big whiny Finn got mad and punched him in the back of the head for it.
3rd Period 10:26 – Kyle Quincey (interference): Minus for Quincey. Easy-to-call penalty as Q clears out the crease without the puck nearby.
3rd Period 19:22 – Sheldon Souray (cross-checking): This is a dumbshit play by Souray, but Abdelkader will get a plus for taking the abuse as part of his job to annoy people in front of the Anaheim net.

Bonus Ratings

+1 to Valtteri Filppula: This one is to get him back to even on a night where I don’t feel he deserved to be an adjusted -1. I thought he held his own very well and created. Dude’s got to finish more chances though.

Honorable Mentions:

I thought the adjustments worked out pretty well for this one.
