CSSI Analysis: Western Conference Semifinals Game 6: Red Wings 3 – Blackhawks 4

The Red Wings lost.

CSSI Methodology Explanation here

Goalie Ratings

Jimmy Howard gave up zero bad goals and Corey Crawford gave up one bad goal, but Corey Crawford also made a lot more saves than Howard and I don’t like Howard getting beaten on the penalty shot. Both head-to-head and overall ratings for Howard will be even.

The Goals

1st Period 03:53 – Chicago Goal (PP): Marian Hossa (wrist shot) from Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith
The Hawks get the puck off the faceoff on the PP and capitalize on a net-front scramble as Hossa jams it in before the net comes off its pegs. Blame here will be shared by Ericsson and Zetterberg (half-minus each). Riggy is too high in the box and Z takes a bad angle on Hossa.

1st Period 18:51 – Detroit Goal: Patrick Eaves (wrist shot) from Drew Miller and Brendan Smith
The Wings pull even late in the period with a great play by Smith to jam a turnover toward the middle of the ice where Drew Miller was waiting to get a shot on net with traffic. Crawford gets the initial shot, but Eaves is there to put in the rebound. Emmerton will get the third assist and Smith will get a bonus half-plus for a great play to move the puck off the boards.

2nd Period 10:11 – Detroit Goal: Joakim Andersson (knuckle puck) from Jakub Kindl
The Wings take the lead on what looks like a harmless wrister from above the top of the circle that knuckles in on Crawford and jumps past his glove. No adjustments here. This is a soft goal.

3rd Period 00:51 – Chicago Goal: Michal Handzus (wrist shot) from Niklas Hjalmarsson
The Hawks pull even early in the third on a bad turnover to Hjalmarsson and an even worse abandonment of coverage leaving Handzus all alone on the doorstep for the easy put away. Smith will get an extra minus for abandoning his net-front responsibility.

3rd Period 05:48 – Chicago Goal: Bryan Bickell (wrist shot) from Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa
The Hawks pull ahead on a crease-crashing play where Bickell gets the best of Brendan Smith on the doorstep after Toews throws it on net from a sharp angle. Smith will get a coverage minus on this play, but so will Datsyuk. Prior to this developing, Quincey gets outmanned 3-to-1 in the corner. His teammates absolutely have to help him here and they don’t. Abdelkader will be cleared.

3rd Period 09:43 – Chicago Goal (PS): Michal Frolik
Frolik gets a penalty shot goal as he goes forehand-backhand and roofs it over Howard’s glove. Colaiacovo will get the penalty minus on this play. I think a soft stick-on-stick tap is kind of ridiculous, but Colaiacovo put himself in a position to take a penalty which is much more about context than it is about actually breaking the rules. 9/10 times they’re going to make this call and Cola getting his shot blocked at the point creates it.

3rd Period 19:08 – Detroit Goal: Damien Brunner (slap shot) from Pavel Datsyuk and Danny Cleary
Detroit makes it interesting as they score a 5-on-4 goal with Howard on the bench. Datsyuk pulls the defense to him off a Cleary pass and then backhands it out to Brunner for a one-timer. No adjustment. Cleary and Franzen actually miscommunicate here and get kind of lucky the Hawks don’t get to the puck.

Penalty Adjustments (pluses and minuses only)

1st Period 03:44 – Jakub Kindl (interference): Kindl senses Frolik is going to beat him to a puck along the boards headed into the Wings’ zone and steps in front of him. Kindl will get a minus.

2nd Period 01:08Johan Franzen (roughing): Franzen kind of misses on a hit by Hjalmarsson and the best I can tell kind of catches him in the head accidentally. I think the glancing blow dealt is the problem here and I’m going to give Franzen a half-minus for it.
2nd Period 03:32 – Detroit Bench (too many men): Jakub Kindl is the one who plays the puck off the bench with too many Red Wings on the ice. Kindl gets the minus.

3rd Period 18:37Henrik Zetterberg (tripping): Obvious call here. Z will get a minus.

Honorable Mentions:

The adjustments fit pretty well for this one. As a note on the totals chart, there’s a goof up in the overall totals that will have to be fixed. Those numbers aren’t correct right now.
