There won’t be much time off for Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde to start the offseason. Team USA Hockey named Lalonde one of the assistant coaches for the 2023 Men’s National Team. Lalonde, who just finished up his first season as bench boss in Detroit, will serve as assistant alongside Scott Gordon, and Ryan Warsofsky on head coach David Quinn’s staff.
This won’t be Lalonde’s first time serving Team USA Hockey. Previously, the New York native helped the U.S. Junior Select Team as both assistant and head coach in 2012 and 2013, respectively.
The Red Wings will have strong representation in the 2023 World Championship, which is slated for May 12-28 in Finland and Latvia. According to reports overseas, Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond will suit up for Team Sweden. Max Bultman reports that Olli Määttä plans to go to Worlds for Finland. When asking Ville Husso about going, Bultman reports that Husso wants to focus on getting ready for the next NHL season.
