Kevin Allen (@ByKevinAllen) of USA Today reported today that the city of Detroit is “Interested in hosting the 2018 World Juniors.”
The knee-jerk reaction from most people will be “Why Detroit?” When in actuality the question should be why not? By that time, Detroit will have a brand new arena to facilitate the event, along with an entirely new district of restaurants, hotels, and stores built around the brand new construction. Apparently Red Wings representatives are visiting Colorado Springs today to speak with USA Hockey about their interest in hosting the event.
Detroit Red Wings executives are in Colorado Springs Thursday to talk with USA Hockey officials about the possibility of Detroit serving as the site for the 2018 World Junior Hockey Championships.
The Red Wings’ new downtown arena is scheduled to be completed by then.
The World Junior Championships showcase the world’s top teen-age players, many of whom go on to play in the NHL. More than 366,000 fans attended the 2015 tournament in Toronto and Montreal.
No doubt in my mind that this would be a fantastic attraction for the city to showcase it’s new district and infrastructure. Detroit is placed in a very geographically friendly spot, considering it’s just a hop and a skip from Canada. Of course, nothing is confirmed, and this is just speculation.. But it would certainly be a very alluring affair for the Red Wings organization, and the city of Detroit as a whole.
