Detroit Red Wings avoid overpaying Matt Martin
While the Red Wings have made controversial deals, the team dodged a bullet by not paying Matt Martin too much for too long.
With many Red Wings fans reacting to today's signings like a boxer barely hanging on until the bell, it appears that a knockout blow has been avoided, at least for now:
DET and NYI both apparently out on Matt Martin. TOR believed to be one of the remaining teams still in the mix. — Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) July 1, 2016
Matt Martin is a good fourth line winger. He's not worth anywhere close to what he will likely get paid, which is appearing to be in the neighborhood of 4 years at $3 million AAV. The Wings dodged a bullet here.
So, it looks like Holland realized that Matt Martin was asking for too much. Oh, wait...

Regardless, the Wings avoided paying a fourth-line grinder too much money for four years.
UPDATE: The Maple Leafs have signed Martin.
