Quick Hits: The Andreas Athanasiou Edition

In Red Wings Land

Red Wings optimistic Andreas Athanasiou close to ending prolonged slump | Detroit News

“It’s coming for him.”

And given it’s a streaky goal-scorer like Athanasiou, once he scores that first one, there’s likely — at least the Red Wings hope — more to come in quick fashion.

“Once he gets one, it comes in bunches,” Larkin said. “He sticks with it, he plays that way every night, he’s going to score a lot of goals.”

This 100%.

I’m not concerned about Athanasiou yet. He’s a good player and eventually the floodgates will open for him.

31 Thoughts: Clock ticking for struggling Flames | Sportsnet

7. Similar situation for the Red Wings and Andreas Athanasiou. I can’t say that Steve Yzerman has put him out there, but waiving Jonathan Ericsson indicates the status quo is not acceptable. Athanasiou started slowly in 2018-19, and still ended up with 30 goals. He’s goalless so far. Complicating all of this is it is a contract year, and the last one was a wrestling match.

I’m not sure where I stand in regards to moving Andreas Athanasiou. I guess it depends on what the return would be? The Wings have a lot of RFAs to sign this offseason, so Steve Yzerman might have to make some tough decisions.

Should the Red Wings trade Andreas Athanasiou this season?
