Quick Hits: The Upside Edition

In Red Wings Land

WHY DETROIT IS AN IDEAL LANDING SPOT FOR BRENDAN PERLINI | The Hockey News

Perlini might be a stopgap, but he’s a stopgap with some upside in his stick. Per naturalstattrick.com, from 2016-17 through 2018-19, 414 NHL forwards logged at least 1,000 minutes at 5-on-5. Among them, Perlini ranked 86th in goals per 60 minutes (between Erik Haula and Anthony Mantha), 109th in individual shot attempts per 60 and 135th in individual scoring chances per 60. That easily places Perlini as a middle-six forward on a per-minute basis. So he has a legitimate chance to help a Detroit team seriously lacking talent while it waits for the kids to develop.

Brendan Perlini will make his Red Wings debut Friday on the road against the Hurricanes.

Ken Holland understands frustration of Red Wings fans | Detroit News

“The last couple of years, I felt the fans’ frustrations. Certainly our expectations in making decisions were to put a better team on the ice. Every franchise seems to go through a rebuilding in a salary cap world. Teams that were once great, those teams are in rebuild modes, and that’s just the nature of a salary cap world.”

Good riddance.

Predators captain Roman Josi finally among highest-paid blueliners | Sportsnet

A phenomenal skater with elite zone entries and exits, the Nashville Predators defenceman finally earned a massive pay raise Tuesday by signing an eight-year extension worth $72.242 million.

As it stands right now, Josi will enter the 2020-21 campaign as the third-highest-paid defenceman in the league behind past Norris Trophy recipients Erik Karlsson and Drew Doughty.

Roman Josi got a lot of money.
