Quick Hits: The NHL Trade Deadline Day Edition

In Red Wings Land

Red Wings scratch Andreas Athanasiou, Mike Green in case of trade | MLive

DETROIT — The Detroit Red Wings scratched forward Andreas Athanasiou and defenseman Mike Green from the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Calgary Flames, calling it “asset management.”

They don’t want to risk either player being injured in case they are traded by Monday’s 3 p.m. deadline.

Despite losing to the Flames, this was the correct decision by Steve Yzerman & co (and let’s be honest, the Wings probably lose to Calgary even with those two in the lineup).

Now, we just wait and see what kind of rabbits Yzerman can pull out of his hat today!

UPDATE: Green was traded to the Oilers for Kyle Brodziak and a conditional 4th round pick.

Steve Yzerman could tap ex-roommate to lead Detroit Red Wings out of darkness | Freep

Nearly four decades after they lived together as rookies in a riverfront apartment in downtown Detroit, Lambert and Yzerman may reunite as Detroit Red Wings cohorts. In his first year as general manager of the Wings, Yzerman has backed coach Jeff Blashill even as the team has plummeted to the bottom of the NHL standings, mostly because the descent reflects the lack of marquee players in the lineup. This will be the fourth straight year the Wings miss the playoffs under Blashill, though, and that could lead Yzerman to make a coaching change when the season ends.

If so, Lambert will be a top candidate.

Lane Lambert as the next head coach of the Red Wings?

Yay or nay?

Detroit Red Wings – 2012

To Detroit: Kyle Quincey

To Tampa Bay: First-round pick in 2012 (Andrei Vasilevskiy)

The Red Wings have a history of moving first-round picks to acquire help. For reference, the Red Wings had just four first-round picks from 2001 until 2012, with Jakub Kindl proving to be the best selection. But this deal in particular turned out awful. Quincey did little to spark a fire in Detroit and the Red Wings failed to make it out of the first round that season. The pick the Wings moved turned into Vasilevskiy, the 2019 Vezina Trophy winner. Detroit could really use his goaltending services right now.
