Quick Hits: The History Lesson Edition

In Red Wings Land

What Red Wings can learn from other bad teams in salary cap era | Sportsnet

Before the coronavirus suspension, the Detroit Red Wings were on pace for the worst season in the salary cap era. That’s not an exaggeration; the Wings needed nine points in their final 11 games to tie the 48 the Avalanche had in 2016-17. In a full 82 game season, no other teams have finished below 52.

Whether the NHL returns or not, this is the fourth straight year the Red Wings will miss the playoffs and a lot of work will need to be done to return to contention.

  1. Smart spending
  2. Draft well
  3. Hire a good coach

That’s what history tells us Steve Yzerman and the Wings need to do.

Wyshynski: Cancel the NHL regular season already | ESPN

Regular-season games could be played with or without fans, but let’s go with the idea that spectators will be in the building — because why go through the trouble of playing them otherwise? Given the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic, how many fans are buying tickets to a regular-season game? Or spending money at a game? How many are going to attend said game, if they already have tickets?

The Detroit Red Wings are 52 points out of a playoff spot and have four home games left. Every one of them is going to be a portrait of social distancing, as each fan gets his or her own section.

Tough to argue with all the points Wyshynski makes in this article.
