Dominik Hasek announces retirement at age 47

Dominik Hasek, the 47-year-old goaltending legend, has decided to retire from professional hockey. This move is not by choice; Hasek and his agent have sought out offers from NHL and AHL teams, but have repeatedly come up empty handed.

But let us take a minute to celebrate the amazing career of the one they call the Dominator.

Hasek competed in four Olympic tournaments (1988, 1998, 2002, 2006), and won a gold medal in ’98 in Nagano. In six games that year, the Dominator posted an outrageous 0.97 goals against average and a 96.1 save percentage.

In the NHL, Hasek was just as — for lack of a better word — dominant. He won six Vezina Trophies, awarded to the best goaltender each season. He is the only goalie to win two Hart Trophies, awarded to the league’s Most Valuable Player.

Hasek also won two Stanley Cups in his 16 NHL seasons. Following the 2008 season in which he and the Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup, Hasek announced his retirement. Hasek and Chris Osgood shared time during the 2008 playoffs.

Less than a year after his retirement, Hasek returned, and played sporadically for two seasons with a Czech and a Russian club.
