Todd Nelson To Be The Next Griffins Coach?

Elliotte Friedman is reporting that Todd Nelson will likely be named the next head coach of the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Nelson has some history with the Wings/Griffins organization from his playing days. He played for the Griffins back when they were in the IHL from 1996-1998, then again in 1999-2000, and finally when the Griffins were part of the AHL he played from 2001-2002. Nelson then became the assistant coach of the Griffins for the 2002-2003 season before leaving the organization to become the head coach of the Muskegon Fury of the UHL. After 3 years as their head coach and 2 league championships, he became the head coach of the Oklahoma City Barons of the AHL for 4 years, before becoming the interim head coach of their parent team the Edmonton Oilers for the 2014-2015 season. The Barons were in the playoffs for all 4 years that Nelson was the coach and they lost to the Griffins in game 7 of the Western Conference Finals in 2013 when the Griffins won the Calder Cup. The Oilers… Well… They were the Oilers.

Nothing’s official yet, but this move wouldn’t surprise me, especially given all Nelson’s history with the team; even if it is mostly “ancient” history. While we wait for any official news, what do you think of the prospect of Todd Nelson being the next Grand Rapids Griffins head coach?

Update:

More sources are confirming what Friedman said.
