Erne’s Exemplary Effort: Red Wings 4, Carolina 2

First Period

Anthony Mantha takes a penalty one minute into the game. Niederreiter scores on a play that Jon Merrill should have done better on. 1-0 Carolina.

Detroit almost immediately goes to the power play, and Erne scores. Zadina drives the net and the rebound pops to Erne, who has a wide open net to shoot at.

Larkin looks like he has an extra gear tonight. Filip Zadina has also notably had a lot of jump.

I didn’t realize until Ken Daniels just said that the league said the Pesce slew foot on Fabbri a few games ago wasn’t a slew foot. I guess I’m not surprised, but it must be nice to not be able to do your job and still keep it like the people in the DOPS have been doing.

Carolina takes another penalty just before the second TV timeout.

Adam Erne is becoming a power play specialist. It’s amazing what happens when the players move the puck quickly and don’t stand in one spot. Detroit goes up 2-1, with every goal in the game coming on the power play.

Larkin singlehandedly creates a power play by controlling the puck, leading to Dougie Hamilton taking a penalty. He then nearly scored on the delayed penalty call. He’s been playing like a man possessed tonight.

Rasmussen almost punctuated a good power play with a power move to the net. I mean, he made the move, but didn’t get the goal.

The period ends 2-1 Detroit, and Detroit pretty clearly outplayed the Hurricanes, which is not something I was planning to write tonight.

Second Period

Erne nearly had the hat trick in the first minute of the period. He got a step on his defender on a break and got it through Reimer, but the puck just went wide.

Carolina ties it shortly after on a shot that Bernier is going to want back. The puck was sent quickly from one dot to the other, and Bernier couldn’t get over in time. 2-2.

It was a hell of a pass, but it still seems like Bernier could have had that.

Christian Djoos takes an interference penalty, but Detroit kills the power play.

Andrei Svechnikov takes a penalty, and should have gotten a second one on the delayed penalty, but let’s see if Erne can get the hat trick on the 5 on 4.

Remember when I said that Dylan Larkin was playing like a man possessed tonight? He went coast to coast and dropped the puck back for Fabbri, who scores to make it 3-2.

Carolina violates the faceoff or something, and Detroit gets another power play. Carolina is really messing with fire here, letting the red hot Detroit power play out on the ice again.

Somehow Carolina gets away with it, and we’re still at 3-2 Detroit. Fabbri came really close to doubling the lead, but he rang it off the post. Just before that, a Mantha clear hit Fleury in the face, but he appears to be ok, relatively speaking.

Rasmussen goes to the box, and I think even Sara would be reaching to find different names for the penalty box with how many penalties have happened in this game.

The period ends 3-2 Detroit, and Carolina will have 48 seconds of penalty time to start the third.

Third Period

Detroit kills the rest of the penalty, and they still lead 3-2.

There was a shift that featured a line of Svechnikov – Rasmussen – Mantha, and I am here for it. This has been a really fun game overall, and a great performance from Detroit. Bernier has been really solid.

Larkin and Fabbri nearly teamed up for another goal, and it was similar to the first time. I was thinking the other night that Detroit hasn’t had a player who could singlehandedly make something happen this season. That’s changed with Larkin’s play recently. He’s created something out of nothing numerous times.

Jordan Staal takes a penalty as he hooks Adam Erne. They get away with it, but Detroit gets a few chances.

With three minutes left, Detroit is still up 3-2, and now we keep our eye on Reimer to see when he’ll head to the bench. He goes with 2 minutes left and a faceoff in Detroit’s defensive zone. Carolina takes a timeout.

Helm chased down the puck to prevent an icing and nearly fed Glendening for the goal to put the game on ice.

Filip Hronek! He couldn’t get the puck in the net for the longest time, but he gets the empty net goal from behind his own goal line. Incredible. 4-2.
