[Game Threads] Caps @ Wings

Alex Ovechkin–and the rest of the Capitals–come into Detroit for the first of a two games against the Red Wings. The Caps started off with an impressive win over the Bruins and won against the Maple Leafs but dropped the next two against the Flyers and Rangers. The Wings dropped the first two games against the Blues in Sweden but picked up an important win over Chicago in the home debut on Thursday night by a final of 3-2.

Unfortunately during that game, the Red Wings lost one of their biggest players as Johan Franzen tore his ACL and will be out for at least four months. How this team responds to the loss of Franzen will speak volumes. There will be a need for secondary scorers to become primary scorers with this loss of Franzen and even more emphasis on solid defensive and special teams play. It will also be interesting to see how often the lines change throughout the game.

What to look for: How will the loss of Johan Franzen affect the offense? Will the defense step -up in the absence of the offense? Look for Nicklas Lidstrom and Brian Rafalski to get plenty of ice-time tonight against this high-powered Caps offense.

Puck will drop at 7:00 p.m. and will air on Comcast DC and Fox Sports Detroit. As always,GO WINGS!

Also, visit the excellent Caps site on SB Nation over at Japer’s Rink for anything related to the Capitals side of things.
