It’s Miller Time: Drew Miller signs one year deal with Detroit

When the Red Wings picked up Drew Miller last year as an insurance policy, nobody expected him to play a vital role. Then Detroit players started dropping like flies to injuries and Miller was called upon to step up, and step up he did.

Miller’s efforts have earned him a one-year contract to stay in Detroit, the team’s official website reported today. Miller scored 10 goals and 9 assists in 66 games last season, all of which were career highs.

It’s also been reported the team is close to reaching deals with Patrick Eaves and Derek Meech as well, which would only leave Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm as the Wings’ remaining free agents. Mike Modano is also being courted by Detroit, and could possibly be the last player they’ll have room for to sign.

Miller’s offensive breakthrough was only an added bonus to his play last year. He played key roles on the penalty kill and was solid in the defensive zone. Miller’s return will give Detroit a reliable defensive forward on the third or fourth line.
