Compliance Buyout: Jordin Tootoo Placed on Waivers

Per multiple sources (but Pleiness used because I like him)

Tootoo, the 31 year old winger who played much of his career in Nashville before joining Detroit is on the last year of a three-year deal averaging $1.9M per season. He signed fresh off a 30-point performance for the Preds in the 2011-12 season, playing 42 games in the lockout-shortened 2012-13 campaign, but only getting into 11 contests this past season, finishing the year in Grand Rapids.

Tootoo has 3 goals and 9 points in his Red Wings career. He always played with his trademark high motor and has legitimately been a great guy in his time with the Wings, but the team’s needs and his inability to provide more offensive spark didn’t jive.

It’s possible that the Wings don’t end up buying him out (which would pay him a total of $1.33M spread over the next two years) and that he gets claimed. If so, the Wings will retain the second buyout. We’ll see what happens.

Considering how little I cared for him during his career in Nashville, I really do wish him the best going forward.
