Marc McNulty Traded to Kamloops Blazers

*In my best Gary Bettman voice*

“Excuse me, excuse me, I have another trade to announce.”

*Boooooooo’s rain down upon me*

“Do you want to hear the trade or not?”

*More Booooo’s*

The Prince George Cougars of the Western Hockey League have announced a trade with the Kamloops Blazers. Detroit Red Wings defensive prospect Marc McNulty and the Cougars 6th round pick in 2016 have been traded to Kamloops in exchange for defenseman Josh Connolly and the Blazers 6th round pick in 2015.

McNulty is a 6’6″ 210# defenseman that the Wings drafted in the 6th round of the 2013 draft 169th overall.

Season Team GP G A PTS +/- PIM
2014-15 Regular Season Prince George Cougars 30 5 10 15 4 64
2013-14 Regular Season Prince George Cougars 67 17 25 42 -10 115
2012-13 Regular Season Prince George Cougars 52 8 7 15 -18 70
2011-12 Regular Season Prince George Cougars 21 0 0 0 -6 8

Kamloops General Manager, Craig Bonner said of the trade

“Marc has always been a player we have coveted off the Cougars roster…Marc is a big and mobile defenseman. He has shown some offensive abilities and also can play with an edge.”

The Wings will have to either sigh McNulty to his entry level contract this year, or let his rights go. I’m sure they’ll sign him, though they have no reason to be in a rush. McNulty’s biggest weakness that I’ve seen is his (get ready for your favorite buzz phrase) compete level and consistency. He’s a big defenseman, but his 210# on his 6’6′ frame leave him very lanky. When he’s engaged, he can be effective, and when he’s not, he can be “meh”. Jiri Fischer made that a point on emphasis with him, but I haven’t been able to watch Marc play so far this year so his progress is… unknown.

The Cougars currently sit in 3rd place in the B.C. Division with 40 pts and a 20-22-0-0 record while the Blazers are in 5th in the same division with 33 pts and a 14-23-3-2 record. I know it comes with the GM job so make any trade sound as great to your fans as possible, but the Blazers GM does really sound like he’s genuinely excited to get McNulty.

This trade, as well as the Jake Paterson trade, don’t have any impact on the the players’ status within the Red Wings organization, it’s merely a trade between junior teams and they’re both still property of the Red Wings.

Good luck in Kamloops, Marc. Make us proud!
