Holy crap you’ve got to be one dedicated hockey fan to give a squirt about tonight’s Wings/Sabres game. It’s right now mathematically impossible for it to happen, but Tampa isn’t very far off from having as many standings points as these two teams combined.
Detroit (66 points) and Buffalo (71) are both pushing hard to stay in the lottery, but Buffalo is going to amazing lengths to fall farther away from the playoff hopes with which they started this season. The Wings may be 5-5 in their last ten games, but the Sabres are 1-8-1 in that same stretch and have earned a whopping five standings points since the trade deadline.
The Wings feel like they’re maybe one step away from trying to give Dylan Larkin food poisoning just to keep him from winning them games, which makes it harder to tell what injuries they’re nursing right now are the super-serious (Mike Green) or the “is a hangnail considered upper or lower body?” variety.
(It’s upper-body, BTW, but I like the argument that your hands hang below your waist).
Stay tuned to WIIM for updates today and later for tonight’s gamethread. LGRW
