Oilers Blog: Copper & Blue
The Red Wings opened their 6-game homestand with a solid performance against the Boston Bruins, but unfortunately they were unable to seal the deal, and came away with only 1 point in a 3-2 OT loss.
Edmonton is in the midst of a road trip that saw them drop a 4-1 decision to the Carolina Hurricanes the other night, a game in which Nail Yakupov was lost due to an ankle injury off a weird play. The Oilers are already missing Connor McDavid with a shoulder injury, and they have found themselves in their usual place as the worst team in the NHL. However, one of their 7 victories this season came against the Wings earlier this year when they beat Detroit 3-1 in Edmonton.
For Detroit, they have continued to play better recently, and have points in 5 straight games. Unfortunately, they have allowed their opponent to tie the game late in the third period twice in a row, which is part of a trend going back the last couple of years where they have been unable to put teams away and earn regulation victories.
After several games against quality opponents, it’s possible the Wings may let their guard down against a team they should beat handily. Hopefully they don’t play down to their opponent.
