Detroit is coming off a bad 4-1 loss to the Dallas Stars, and Chicago gave up 7 goals to Vancouver in their last game, a 7-5 loss. Both teams are hoping for better outcomes in this game.
While Detroit has been terrible in pretty much every area all season, the goaltending has been particularly bad, especially from Jimmy Howard. Jonathan Bernier has played better of late, but both Red Wings netminders have hurt the team, even taking the poor defense in front of them into account.
For example, out of the 62 goalies who have the most unblocked shots against, Jimmy Howard’s Goals Saved Above Expected is 61st (-16.07), with only Pekka Rinne below him. Jonathan Bernier is not quite as bad, but he’s still 38th out of 62 (-5.04).
Both Blackhawks goalies are higher. Robin Lehner is 15th, and Corey Crawford is 29th. So, no matter which goalie starts for each team, Chicago will have the advantage in net.
