Blackhawks SBNation Blog: Second City Hockey

The Red Wings and Blackhawks face off at Little Caesars Arena tonight, giving Detroiters and green clad Chicagians the opportunity to see first-hand evidence whether Jonathan Toews is still carbon based or now a hologram. Sure there appears to be tangible evidence he exists on the television, but who knows anymore with the black mirror and such.

In their last meeting, Detroit blanked the Hawks 4-0 in what was a Sunday morning tilt. The Wings had been coming in on what was a back to back with travel putting up a surprisingly strong performance in front of Petr Mrazek.

Chicago has been struggling all season long. It’s been the perfect storm of cap hits, injury, and age catching up to the dynasty of this decade. Most damning has been the injury to the quiet backstop of their last couple Cups, Corey Crawford. They’ve been 5-7-1 since he went down with an upper body injury. He’s expected to join the team after the all-star break. When he’ll resume starting is still unknown.

Starting in Crawford’s place has been a tandem of Jeff Glass and Anton Forsberg. Glass started the previous game against the Wings, but played last night, losing on a Willie Nylander penalty shot in Chicago. Expect to see Forsberg.

For the Wings, unfortunately no Joe Hicketts. The decision came to bring up Dominic Turgeon, send Booth down and keep Witkowski around. It’s exhausting isn’t it? Oh well. The Wings didn’t play an especially bad game against the Flyers. So aside from Turgeon I don’t foresee Blashill playing with lines too much. Obviously Howard will be starting. There was no skate Wednesday, we’ll update you with any changes in the Game Day Update.
