Forget the losing streak.
Tonight, we get to say “hello old friend.” Petr Mrazek, a former draft pick of the Ken Holland regime, will start for the Red Wings. It’s weird to say that here in March of 2025. Feels like some sort of fever dream.
It’s been a dreadful month for the Wings, and it hasn’t gone much better for the Buffalo Sabres. They’re coming off a win over Edmonton on Monday, but were losers of six straight games before that. Both Detroit and Buffalo are at the very bottom of the Atlantic standings. Womp Womp. At least Detroit’s playoff chances haven’t completely evaporated. There’s still hope they can right the ship and get into a wild card spot — it won’t be easy, though.
Buffalo is, well, not a good team. This game is more than winnable for Detroit — but there is some uncertainty with Mrazek. He’s much-needed depth, yet that doesn’t mean he will be reliable depth. The Wings are coming off of one of their best performances of the season, despite a losing the game against Ottawa. If they can match that same tenacity tonight, I’m confident they can take care of the Sabres on home ice. The lineup is the same, other than starting goaltender. Just try and stay out of the penalty box (this PK is absolutely dreadful – dead last in the NHL) and they’ll be fine.
