Open Thread Day 11: And the Teams Played On

Day two of round one sees day one flow into it. Four games turned into five after the crazy first night.

Here’s what’s on tap for today’s games. We’ll use this as an open thread for today’s games.

Carolina Hurricanes (5) at Boston Bruins (4)

Scotiabank Arena, Toronto

Best of 7: Series tied 0-0

Time: 11:00 am ET

TV: , NBCSN, CBC, SN, TVAS, NESN, FS-CR

Team Sites: Canes Country, Stanley Cup of Chowder

Well, let’s try this one again. Moved one day to the right after the insane marathon of hockey Tampa Bay and Columbus, Boston and Carolina kick off this day of hockey with what should be a very interesting matchup. Boston was arguably the best team in the NHL during the shortened regular season but has looked flat since the restart. Carolina, on the other hand, seems to have found themselves and a new gear since hockey returned. The talent for Boston is there, but can they flip the proverbial switch in time or will Carolina’s speed and aggressive be too much for them.

New York Islanders (6) at Washington Capitals (3)

Scotiabank Arena, Toronto

Time: 3:00 pm ET

TV: , NBCSN, SN, TVAS, NBCSWA, MSG, MSG+

Team Sites: Jasper’s Rink, Lighthouse Hockey

One can never count out the Capitals as long as Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson are on the team. That said, the Islanders seem to have mastered the system that the Capitals won a Cup with so this series should be a very interesting one to watch unfold…even if the hockey itself might be a little dull at times.

Arizona Coyotes (7) at Colorado Avalanche (2)

Rogers Place, Edmonton

Time: 5:30pmET

TV: NBCSN, TVAS, ALT, FS-A PLUS, FS-A (JIP)

Team Sites: Mile High Hockey, Five for Howling

I want to say nice things about how Arizona dispatched Nashville with some timely scoring and outstanding goaltending and that the likes of Taylor Hall, Phil Kessel, etc could provide enough offense for them to get past Colorado. While anything can happen for sure (see Chicago and Montreal this year or Columbus this year and last), Colorado is easily the better team on the ice and likely too much for Arizona to handle over a seven game series.

Montreal Canadiens (8) at Philadelphia Flyers (1)

Scotiabank Arena, Toronto

Time: 8:00pmET

TV: NBCSN, CBC, SN, TVAS, MBCSP

Team Sites: Broad Street Hockey , Habs Eyes on the Prize

The Canadiens come in after pulling off probably the biggest upset of the opening round. Now they get a chance to knock off the other team from Pennsylvania. They will need every bit of Carey Price’s magic as Philadelphia comes into the series playing their best hockey of the season and possibly the best of any team in the playoffs. After everything that has happened so far it would be silly to completely dismiss Montreal, but it would not be surprising to see the Flyers win this one relatively with ease.

Vancouver Canucks (5) at St. Louis Blues (4)

Rogers Place, Edmonton

Time: 10:30 pm ET

TV: , NBCSN, CBC, SN, FS-MW

Team Sites: St. Louis Game Time, Nucks Misconduct

The last of the opening games pits the defending Cup champion Blues against the up and coming Canucks. Vancouver has more of the name recognition with Elias Pettersson, Brock Besser and Quinn Hughes but St. Louis is the deeper team and has the experience. Expect to see Colton Parayko to wear Pettersson like a shirt all night long.
