Quick Hits: Trade Deadline Day!

Red Wings News

Red Wings acquire good-sized, skilled forward Erik Cole from Dallas for two prospects, second-round pick | MLive.com
The Wings made a trade yesterday, and a really good one, may I add, when they added the StarsErik Cole. Cole is a borderline top-6 winger who can provide a nice bit of scoring depth to the Wings’ offense. Cole scored 18 goals and 33 points in 57 games for the Stars this season. In return for Cole, the Wings sent prospects Mattias Janmark and Mattias Bäckman, along with a second-round draft pick to the Stars. The Wings also received a conditional third-round draft pick from the Stars, that we lose if we make the Eastern Conference Finals. Fine with me!

Detroit Red Wings’ Darren Helm to have MRI on upper-body injury Monday | Detroit Free Press
Part of the reason behind the Wings’ move for Erik Cole was to provide the offense with some depth if Helm is out for an extended time period.

Red Wings’ Brendan Smith frustrated by abuse he’s taken past two games, steps up against Nashville | MLive.com
If the Wings make a move for a defenseman today, Smith is definitely going to have to step up his game.

NHL News

Trade: Rangers land Yandle, Coyotes receive Duclair, first-rounder | ProHockeyTalk
By far the biggest trade of the season so far occurred yesterday with the Arizona Coyotes finally moving defenseman Keith Yandle. The Wings have had an interest in Yandle for years, but at the price that the Rangers paid for him, I am glad that the Wings stayed away. Anthony Duclair, New York’s equivalent of Anthony Mantha, was moved along with John Moore, an underrated defenseman, and a first-round draft pick.

Could Dion Phaneuf become the next Larry Murphy? | The Hockey News
One player to keep a close eye on today is Toronto’s Dion Phaneuf, who has been linked to the Wings. If he is moved to Detroit, let’s hope that the result is the same as when a fellow Leaf, Larry Murphy, was moved prior to the Wings winning back-to-back Stanley Cup’s in the late-90’s.

Report: Flyers want to trade Coburn by deadline – Sportsnet.ca
Defenseman Braydon Coburn may be moved today, but I hope that the Wings stay away from him. He is not a bad player, but he would not serve as much of an upgrade over anything that we currently have.

Trade Talk: Bruins looking to trade | TSN
The Flames are apparently shopping Jiri Hudler. Is it time to bring Happy back to Detroit? (No.)

Blackhawks’ Patrick Sharp combats ‘untrue’ rumors about personal life – CBSSports.com
The Blackhawks are dealing with some internal issues at the moment, and there has been a lot of talk surrounding Patrick Sharp, including the possibility that he is traded. I doubt that he is moved today, but he could be traded in the summer to free up cap space.
