Quick Hits: John Scott Suspended; John Moore To Follow?

Red Wings News

5 things to watch: Will Red Wings’ Johan Franzen be ready this week? Changes coming to power play? | MLive.com
This is going to be a fun, and interesting, week for the Wings. Am I the only one that is worried about Sunday’s game against the Sabres? It feels like one of those games that we should win ten times out of ten, but, we still somehow manage to lose.

Detroit Red Wings trust, encourage Danny DeKeyser to make plays | Detroit Free Press
In response to a discussion started in yesterday’s Quick Hits comments, I do not think that DeKeyser will ever become a true #1 defenseman, in the Lidström-definition of that role. That said, I do expect him to develop into a top-pairing defenseman, similar to Kronwall in calibre.

Red Wings ninth best in NHL for game-day impact on the pocketbook | Crain’s Detroit Business
In terms of financial fan friendliness, the Wings are the ninth best team in the NHL. Who was the worst? The Toronto Maple Leafs.

Red Wings’ Justin Abdelkader believes he’s only scratched the surface with offensive potential | MLive.com
Justin Abdelkader is never going to lead the Wings in scoring. But, if he can develop into a player who can consistently contribute 15+ goals and 30+ points, then I will be really pleased.

Arena District Has Three Properties That Won’t Sell Out | Curbed Detroit
One of the properties was purchased for $25,000 12 years ago. The Ilitches tried to buy it for $350,000 10 years ago, but, the offer was turned down. The longer the property manages to hold out, the more the Ilitches will be forced to pay to buy the property. Not a bad business strategy on the owner’s part.

Let’s hope that this does not develop into anything serious for Maatta!

Seymon Varlamov accused in civil lawsuit of beating girlfriend multiple times – SBNation.com
I wonder if the NHL will suspend Varlamov this time around, after the NFL’s Ray Rice incident.

Sharks’ John Scott suspended two games | ProHockeyTalk
That did not take long.

John Moore ejected for head-shot vs. Wild; guess the suspension (Video) | Puck Daddy
Before yesterday’s suspension of John Scott, the NHL had handed out zero suspensions this season. Moore will most likely be the second recipient of the punishment.

NHL Power Rankings | TSN
TSN has the Wings up five spots this week, from #17 to #12.

Video: Chris Kreider ejected for hit from behind on Jonas Brodin (Updated) | ProHockeyTalk
That was a powerful hit! I doubt that he will be suspended, but, it would not be out of the realm of possibility to see him given a one-game suspension.

Line brawl erupts in Anaheim as John Scott goes after Ducks – SBNation.com
The Ducks and Sharks must love each other. The game featured a total of 165 penalty minutes!

McKenzie: 10-game threshold holds different meaning for different teams | TSN
If a player makes a team significantly better, then I think that it is worth keeping him up beyond the 9/10-game threshold. Whether to send a player back to juniors after his ninth game should always be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Ex-Wild, Devils forward Palmieri returns to Germany | ProHockeyTalk
Nick Palmieri played in a total of 87 career NHL games for the Wild and the Devils, scoring 13 goals and 25 points.

Roundtable: Is the NHL All-Star Game Facing Extinction? | The Hockey Writers
Compared to the other North American sports leagues, the NHL has one of the best All-Star game setups. The only other league that I think rivals it is the NBA. As long as the NHL does not add playoff implications to the game, as the MLB did, then I am content with whatever the league sees fit in doing with the game.

Frozen really was a great movie.

Yakupov or Galchenyuk: Did Oilers get right one? | Sportsnet.ca
Hindsight is 20/20. At the time, I thought Yakupov was the best player out of himself, Galchenyuk, and Ryan Murray, and I thought that the Oilers had made the right decision by drafting him. Now, the Oilers and the rest of the world may rightly think that Galchenyuk is a better player, but, at the time, that was not the case.
